Layers and Broilers
Both our egg layers and broiler chickens are pastured. This means the egg-layers are given access to pasture on rotation adjacent to their coops. We plan to build a movable chicken coop or “eggmobile.” The broilers (chickens for meat) are moved daily in chicken tractors. On pasture, Chickens will forage for plants and insects to supplement the grain-based feed we provide for them.
Moving the chickens allow us to make the best use of chicken manure as a soil amendment. This way we are able to spread out the nitrogen content in their manure over a large area. It acts as a fertilizer that helps our pastures grow back faster and stronger after the sheep graze them.
